TRI has developed a geotextile-specific porometer to accurately measure the flow capacity and open area /pore sizes of woven and nonwoven geotextiles. The TRI porometer is the first of its kind to focus on geotextile materials.

Project Details

Specific geometries of sample position and flow meters, as well as flow pumps and pressure meters, achieved a porometer with excellent measurement capability for geotextile characterization. The use of a porometer for the determination of permittivity/hydraulic flow capacity, and apparent opening size of geotextiles was made possible with the TRI porometer.

Impact: The use of a porometer is now allowed in ASTM D4491, Standard Test Methods for Water Permeability of Geotextiles by Permittivity, and ASTM D4751, Standard Test Methods for Determining Apparent Opening Size of a Geotextile, making these laboratory measurements faster, easier and more accurate.
